Worked in UK & Singapore
Building Services Engineer
I started by designing heating, ventilation, cooling and hot and cold water systems to go in new and refurbished buildings. I’ve come to realise that, as around 40% of the UK’s carbon emissions are down to existing buildings, that I want to work to provide solutions to reduce this. So I’m now working on more projects to reduce the carbon emissions in supplying buildings with energy, through district heating systems and building integrated renewable technologies. I’m also tackling reducing the energy demand of buildings by carrying out energy audits and recommending where occupants can save energy.
My Typical Day: My job is so varied that I don’t have a typical day.
If I’m in the office I could be working out how big mechanical systems need to be, how much windows need to open to prevent overheating in summer by using natural ventilation, writing reports, using 3D CAD to produce drawings, writing specifications and more.
If I’m out of the office, I could be meeting with clients to see what they want out of their projects; meeting with architects, contractors, engineers from other disciplines to collaborate on designs; surveying buildings; checking construction progress….
What I'd do with the money
Bring Project Ove to Bristol
Project Ove is a 3D model of the human body imagined by building engineers: http://www.arup.com/Pushing_the_boundaries_of_BIM I’d like to hold an event in Bristol and invite along students and teachers from the south-west to demonstrate how exciting buildings can be – and work out how we can’t power @ProjectOVE sustainably.
