Yes, we follow rules set by different organisation, for example the Health and Safety Executive and the Department of Energy and Climate Change, which are run by the government. This is to make sure that our designs are safe for people and the environment.

Health and Safety are the main rules that we have to abide. Whenever we do anything new (which is always) a full risk assessment must be conducted. Good engineering minimises risk so we design not just for function but also safety.

Other guidelines we have a work are about respect and how we conduct ourselves as professionals. It doesn’t really need to be written down but it helps to set an ethos for our organisation.

Hi @165enec22 – I use a supercomputer and there’s many boring rules about how to login and use it. The most exciting rule is that I’m not allowed to use the supercomputer to design nuclear weapons or weapons of mass destruction. I’m also not allowed to do work that makes money for my own pocket.

There are SOOOOOOOOOOO many rules in engineering!

Everything around you has been designed and built around you has been subjected to rules! It makes sure things are safe, consistent and easier to use! Every day I work to industry standards, to make sure what I’m designing is safe!

But the rules are a bit different from school, your allowed to run in the corridors (just kidding… we’re not) but we are allowed to chew gum if we want… (although I wouldn’t advise doing this in a coal power station… if I can find the selfie i took of me after one recent visit I’ll upload it!)
