Meeting, meetings and more meetings. I know they are important but I reckon I could spend maybe 20% of my time in meetings, which, if you think about it is talking about work instead of doing work 🙂

But more seriously – it is important to have structure and to plan the work you do with others – but good time management and short effective meetings are the way forward.

I had a job at a small combined heat and power station a while ago. That means that there was a network is hot water pipes, about 6km long, giving hot water (for heating, not drinking!) to 14 different buildings. There was a leak of hot water somewhere and we didn’t know where it was… I spent about 3 months walking around the pipe work, going into the buildings we gave hot water to and doing tests on the water system to try to locate the water leak! It was like being a detective! I found it and got it fixed in the end :).

When I worked for Surrey County Council, one of my tasks was to write a report on the traffic flows on the M25 motorway. I had to turn 10 years of traffic data from about 50 data collection points into charts and write about the trends in the data. It took me about 6 months, but felt like 6 years. Boooorrring!!!
