I will continue to work on developing renewable energy technology – in particular we can reduce our need to fossil fuels by harnessing solar thermal power – yes, even in the UK and yes, even in winter – it is possible! The real trick is to make it cost effective!

I think fossil fuels are important in our energy mix at the moment!

The demand for electricity changes every second and power stations are constantly trying to match the supply and demand!

Nuclear power provides a large % of that (around 30%) and renewable energy offers about 15%… the gaps are filled between by coal / gas!.. but its more than that, we dont really control what we get from renewables.. (except hydro!) so what we need to learn is how to store energy, effectively big batteries, so we can harness and use the power from renewables more effectively!

However in the mean time, we have to make sure the coal and gas we use (we still need energy! we cant get rid of it just yet) is used as efficiently as possible, making as little impact on the environment as possible!

I work in the extraction of fossil fuels, so I will make sure that we are doing this in a safe and efficient way. I think it’s important to teach people about energy systems and how all that works, so I am running an event next week to talk to a group of students about how to tackle climate change. If people understand it, they can adapt their lifestyles to save fossil fuels but also push the government and business to do more to save fossil fuels.

My research involves improving the amount of electricity generated by wind farms, the safety of nuclear power stations and the possibility of building fusion reactors. All of these activities could mean we leave the fossil fuels in the ground.

I help reduce the demand for energy by making sure that buildings and the people in them are more efficient, like making sure they can turn off lights or keep cool without the need for air conditioning.
I also look at how buildings can use renewable energy, like putting solar panels on the roof.
Also, I’m trying to divest my pension from fossil fuel funds plus I cycle to work.
