• Question: what was your favourite place to visit with your your job(engineering) ?

      Oooh tough question! I like being on site, so inside power stations or offshore on oil and gas platforms. They are very different to anywhere else I’ve ever been to. I also like visiting the engineering institution’s buildings, like the Royal Academy of Engineering, where I’ve been to attend some talks (and sometimes give talks!) is in a really old building near Buckingham Palace in London. When I’m in there, I like thinking about the history of the building and all the other amazing people that have been there in the past!

      India – it’s not always the most comfortable place – but it is where I can see my research making a real difference; we’re building a renewable energy power plant to provide electricity for a small community

      And the food is great!

      Space facilities are the most amazing!

      I’ve had dinner underneath a Saturn V rocket suspended from the ceiling at NASA in Florida. That was awesome.

      I’ve also had a tour of the experimental facilities at the European Space Agency in the Netherlands. Any satellite that is launched by ESA is tested under all the conditions that might be experienced at launch or in space. They have a vacuum chamber that takes 1 week to cool down to the temperature of space and inside is a “virtual” sun – an array of 2000 watt bulbs blasting heat on one side of the satellite. The temperature of the satellite is near absolute zero on the other side – just like in space! Incredible facilities!
