If I had no idea how to start… GOOGLE!! From there I should be able to see if anyone else has done it before, and get an idea of what I need to do and make a plan. If I got really stuck, I would probably ask some of my colleagues for some pointers and work things out from there.

Google is usually a good start! You can get a wealth of knowledge from reputable sources! However I have to be honest, speaking to experienced teams of engineers is the best way to go about a project! Hopefully one day i’ll be the engineer people are coming to speak to regarding their projects!

Sorry I didn’t answer this one quickly. It is generally true in this process that the longer I take to respond, the more difficult the question! I’ve been lazy and skipped all the hard ones like yours.
If I think about one of my engineering projects, the truth is that they are so complicated that it is impossible to work on them without input from other people. I believe that this is true in most engineering projects. Things are so complicated nowadays, that you need to bring together teams of people with different areas of expertise to deliver a successful project.
If I try and tackle this question from the point of view of a simple task in a bigger project, I also have difficulty in answering. Doing a simple task “properly” in a larger project requires interacting with people working on the other tasks, as their requirements may place constraints on what you should be doing.
So – you’ve beaten me 🙂
