Research and development in engineering is very competitive. Nobody remembers the second person to build a steam engine or the second person to make an electric light bulb. My team has to be number 1 in the world for what they do!

I don’t feel that my work place is particularly competitive. We are a team of people with different skills doing out best to complete our project, so it feels more collaborative than competitive. Also, everyone in the team is at a different stage in their career… so there isn’t any direct competition, at least not for me.

Within my department, we all work as a team. If one person is successful we all share in their achievement! But outside of that, we compete! We write proposals (engineering ideas) and try to get industry to pay for them – there is a limited budget, so the best one wins
